45 ml | Hayman's Sloe Gin |
15 ml | John D. Taylor's Velvet Falernum Liqueur |
7.5 ml | Luxardo Maraschino liqueur |
30 ml | Pineapple juice |
15 ml | Lime juice (freshly squeezed) |
22.5 ml | Egg white (pasteurised) |
60 ml | Fever-Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit Soda |
Garnish:
Slice a whole grapefruit in half down the middle (if the stem and belly button are the North and South Pole then slice on the equator). Then slice again on the poles to create grapefruit quarters. Along the latitudes slice medium thin slices to create a grapefruit half moon. Dehydrate then char with a blowtorch. This creates a highly aromatic and attractive garnish for your cocktail.
How to make:
Combine all wet ingredients into a shaker tin. Shake with large ice cubes until chilled and diluted. Strain back into your tin and shake again with no ice. This second shake should take about twelve seconds. Fine strain into a tall Collins glass. Top with your strawberry flavored alcoholic seltzer to fill the glass (2oz). Garnish with a straw and a dehydrated and charred grapefruit half moon.
Origin:
This cocktail is a Sloe Gin Fizz variation that takes all the fun of masterfully blending powerful flavors from Tiki culture and arrives at a modern recipe and presentation.
This cocktail was created in 2021 by myself at the Verdigris Bar in Kansas City. I love topping (or spiking) my flavored alcoholic seltzers and sodas with liqueurs or aperitifs for added alcohol and complexity. This does the opposite but used that idea as inspiration and adds another layer of flavor to a cocktail in the place of flavorless soda water.
Sloepoke is a play on phrase "Slow poke" used to describe someone who moves slowly. I like to think that anyone drinking this cocktail allows themselves to slow down, relax, and enjoy the subtleties in life while enjoying a playful and delicious cocktail.
