Origin:
The Martinez has faded out of fashion in recent years in the face of the behemoth that is the Martini. Old Tom Gin has been shunted to the sidecar in favor of liquid as dry as some of my friends' sense of humor. Even the category of Gin has been relegated to second fiddle to it's plainer cousin Vodka.
Such a tragedy!
I kid, I kid: who doesn't love an ice cold Original Gin Martini, am I right?
However, The Rhuby Sipper is perfect for those times when you want something with a bit more character, constitution and color! Hayman's has helped highlight the beauty of the Old Tom Gin category and what better way to celebrate than with a riff on the cocktail that started it all: the Martinez! This modern take brings in Rabarboro Liqueur to add a smooth tartness to help balance our choice of Old Tom Gin and a modern favorite vermouth/amaro hybrid Aperitivo: Punt e Mes. The most unexpected twist of this tipple is the chocolate bitters. Often found in modern classics like the Revolver and Left Hand, the bitter chocolate pairs incredibly well with the creamy depth of Hayman's Old Tom Gin and the spice and orange notes of the Aperitivo. This cocktail embodies the spirit of Old Tom Gin with modifiers carefully selected to highlight the beauty of the spirit while offering an exquisite complexity and bittersweet backbone to the cocktail. It's tough to go wrong with a classic template, modern ingredients and the perfect spirit of London since 1863, Hayman's Gin!
